Priest Renounces 'Wife' and Rev.
MoonByline, Staff Writer
In the latest twist to an ecclesiastical soap opera, the Vatican (news
- web
sites) released a letter today in which an African archbishop
renounced his life with a South Korean woman he wed in Manhattan through
the Rev. Sun Myung Moon.
“I now rededicate my life to the Catholic Church with all my heart,”
Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo wrote to Pope John Paul (news
- web
sites) II, with whom he met privately last Wednesday. “I renounce my
life together with Maria Sung and my relationship with Rev. Moon.”
The Vatican, however, has not disclosed Milingo’s whereabouts, leaving
the 71-year-old Zambian archbishop’s bride and officials in Moon’s
Unification Church to suggest he had been kidnaped or drugged.
“If he says he wants to leave me, in his own voice, I’m sure he’s under
the effect of drugs,” said Sung, the 43-year-old South Korean doctor
Milingo wed on May 27 in a mass ceremony Moon conducted at the New York
Hilton.
